Just Like Heaven - September 2005

Reese Witherspoon dials it down a few notches and hits it out of the park. Am I allowed to mix my metaphors like that? I think I should be. Witherspoon is a lifetime away from her, dare I say, annoying "Legally Blonde" persona. Here, she’s actually acting and it’s a nice change.

"Just Like Heaven" is an old-fashioned romance like they never used to make. Sweet and sensitive but not silly, which is often the case these days. It’s a variation on the old 'Only You Can See the Ghost' formula, but with a nice twist. It suffers from the introduction of a forced crisis near the end, but the actual ending is true to the tone of the first two acts. If you’re in the mood for a romance movie, this is a good one.
