I enjoy a good romantic comedy once in a while, but this isn’t the one. "Must Love Dogs" follows the genre formula pretty closely but doesn’t do anything to endear us to the characters.
Diane Lane plays the woman whose internet dating profile includes the phrase 'Must love dogs.' John Cusack is the reluctant Romeo. Problem is, since the movie doesn’t do much to draw us in, the leads need to provide chemistry to keep us interested. Lane, who was the fiercely stubborn and independent woman in "Under the Tuscan Sun," can’t convincingly play a desperate and lonely divorcee. Not with that face. Cusack, on the other hand, makes you want to shake him and say, 'No more romantic comedies for you, young man! Make more movies like "High Fidelity," "Being John Malkovich" and "Grosse Point Blank!”' "Must Love Dogs" was a nice try but it didn’t click.
